The Power of Quitting
Posted by Vernon
Jonathan Selwood asked:

As humans, we again and again find ourselves dumping resources into lost causes: be they pointless wars, failed public policies, hopeless dating prospects, annoying friends, or dandelion-free lawns. I say take a stand (or actually, a seat in this case), and just quit.

Despite proclamations to the contrary from lame duck presidents, failure is an option, and often the most expedient one.

Tenth grade was the year that I learned the most important lesson of my life. I had somehow found myself on both the football and the wrestling teams despite a deep and profound hatred for the twin sports of football and wrestling. I don’t think I’m alone in falling victim to peer/societal pressure during high school, but my participation in these sports (in particular the after-school practices) was making my life a living hell. In smoggy 100+ degree L.A. heat, the football coach would make the team run around the track until people literally started puking (with me often leading the trend), and the wrestling coach would force us to attend three-hour-plus practices which left us so worn-out that we inevitably lost the actual matches.

By tenth grade, I started praying that my carpool would crash on the ride to school and leave me too crippled to play. Desperate and on the verge of tears, I confessed this to a friend one day, and after looking at me like I was some kind of lunatic, he said simply, “Dude, quit.”

Quit?

The thought that I could actually quit something had never crossed my mind. After all, “quitters never win” and “winners never quit” and “good things come in small packages”… etc. That very day, I went up to my football coach and told him I was quitting. Since I basically ****** at football, he simply said “okay” and shrugged. Elated beyond belief, I went straight home and turned on the TV. Learning to quit had miraculously changed me from a miserable ******* running circles around a field until I vomited into a smiling young man lounging on the couch eating raw cookie dough out of the tube. Not only that, but I finally found time to indulge in some of those recreational drugs I’d been hearing so much about.

Of course, a few months later when wrestling season started, I learned that quitting isn’t always so easy. While I was far from a great wrestler, I was at least okay, and just so happened to be the only kid in my weight class. I also had a psychopath for a coach.

When I came into the gym before practice, and told him I was quitting, he turned a disturbing shade of plum.

“You can’t quit! You’re our 175 pounder!”

“I’m sorry, but wrestling just isn’t for me.”

“What are you some kind of homo?” (Since wrestling essentially involves rolling around on the floor and groping other skimpily-clad boys, homophobia was actively encouraged.)

“Uh… no…”

“Listen to me.” Since he wasn’t a tall man, he went up on his tiptoes to get in my face. “If you quit now, you will regret this for the rest of your goddamn life. On your f#!%ing deathbed in whatever loser s#!%hole you end up in, you will regret this!”

All the other miserable wrestlers had stopped rolling around on the sweat-soaked mats and were staring at me in awe by this point, but I stayed strong and walked out of the gym a quitter. I have to admit that for the next hour or so, I was in shock, wondering if I really had made a horrible decision. But when I got home, cranked up the stereo, and kicked it on the couch with my tube of cookie dough and bong, I started to cry—tears of joy. It is, to this day, the single best decision I have ever made.

EXERCISES

Do you regularly find yourself “putting in extra effort?” Perhaps you occasionally “burn the midnight oil” or even find yourself “sautéing the corporate shiitake?” Well, the following exercises should make you a quitter in no time.

1) TAKE UP A NEW HOBBY OR SPORT AND THEN QUIT IT

I recommend doing this in the “New Year’s Resolution” tradition. I’ll take up a sport (I thinking boxing was the last one I tried) and train like a madman for a week, spending hours in the gym or on the field and reading every book I can find on the subject. Then at the end of the week, I quit. I tell you, it makes you feel like you’re lying on the couch eating cookie dough for the first time.

With hobbies I go out of my way to pick something really really pointless, lest I end up actually enjoying it. I’ve tried everything from trainspotting to studying Esperanto. At the end of the week, I ***** open a twelve pack and watch Family Guy reruns until I forget every bit of useless hobby-related knowledge I’ve acquired. It’s almost on par with bitch-slapping your boss and walking out of a job you really ****.

2) QUIT READING NOW AND DO NOT ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

1) What’s the most amount (in kilograms) of cheese that you’ve ever eaten in one sitting?

2) If you had to have nonconsensual *** with a member of the crustacean subphylum, would you go lobster or crab?

3) Valium or Vicodin?

4) Would you rather slaughter and clean an ostrich or a moose?

5) Are you more prejudiced against redheads or people with webbed toes?

6) If you were a **** star, what would be your onscreen specialty?

7) Would you rather have really big hair or a really small head?

8) They just announced that your plane’s departure time has been delayed ten minutes. Do you join all the other moronic passengers in whipping out your cell phone and calling someone who obviously doesn’t give a crap?

9) Would you rather spend two years in a maximum security prison, or have your left foot amputated?

10) If you had to bludgeon a small child to death, would you use:

a) A baseball bat.

b) A hammer.

c) A golf club.

d) Another small child.

Living Your Faith at Work and Wrestling With the Seven Deadly Sins
Posted by Vernon
Winnie Anderson asked:

The list of violations we know today as the Seven Deadly Sins is believed to have been compiled in the first few centuries after the death of Jesus.  But these sins continue to be alive and well in workplaces around the world.

From anger, to envy, to greed, and even sloth, we can  get tripped up by the Seven Deadly Sins in the office and on the shop floor.

Pride – As Al Pacino’s character said in The Devil’s Advocate, “…It’s my favorite sin.” It’s the one that gets us in the most trouble and is interwoven with all the others.  It’s our efforts to soothe, stroke, and magnify our ego that drive us to believe that we’re really the center of the universe and that it’s really all about us.  It’s not.  It’s about God.

Anger – Jesus never asked us to not get angry.  He told us that when we get angry “with cause” we should talk to “our brother” to resolve the problem.  We can easily find a cause to justify our anger.  When we do lose our temper we often choose to ignore the person, talk about them, or retaliate with passive / aggressive behavior rather than talk out our issue and solve the problem.

Envy – We envy the money, positions, and power of others. It’s so easy to get caught up in this earthly existence and compare what others have to what we have.  When we envy others we’re telling God that we don’t appreciate what He’s given us and we lose focus on what should really be the center of our joy:  Our heavenly Father.

Gluttony – Workaholism is gluttony in the workplace.  By constantly trying to fill ourselves up with work, and by overloading our plate with tasks and projects, we attempt to fill a void in our hearts that can only be filled with the healing power of God’s love.  It’s time we asked ourselves why we continue to work more when we seem to enjoy it less all the time.

Greed – We live in a state of abundance that’s amazing and take it all for granted. Whether we demonstrate greed for money, for “face-time” with the boss, or for a bigger kingdom to manage, it’s easy to get caught up in this quicksand of always wanting more. Remember Jesus’ admonition that “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Lust – We lust for power; we lust for sexual contact; and we lust for things.  Lust is the emotion of desire taken to the extreme.  While there’s nothing wrong with the desire we have for our spouse or the desire to improve ourselves and grow in our career, we must remain vigilant that those desires don’t  become the focus of our lives.  That’s the spot reserved for God.

Sloth – When we accepted our jobs we agreed to put our employer’s objectives ahead of our own business objectives.  Our employer pays us the wages we accepted and in exchange, we agreed to give our all to the tasks asked of us.  When we don’t do that, we demonstrate sloth at work. We can rationalize and make excuses all we want, but that’s not living up to our end of the bargain.

Being Christians 24-hours a day means we’re supposed to live our faith every moment of every day.   We spend more time at work than we do with our families.  The workplace is where our faith is tested most and where we have to work the hardest to align our behavior with our spiritual beliefs.  As Christians, we are to reflect the light of Christ in our words and actions no matter where we are.

Even at work.

A Super Truck Fit for a Super Fan
Posted by Vernon
Tim Saunier asked:

My name is Leslie, and I am a wrestle-aholic. The first step to recovery is acknowledging that you have a problem, but frankly, I don’t care. I love wrestling, wrestlers and everything that goes along with this fantastic sport. If watching a wrestling match is a disease, I hope they never find a cure.

I watch all the different wrestling organizations on TV, but my favorite has to be our local SABYWF—the Southern Arizona Back-Yard Wrestling Federation. Most of their bouts aren’t actually televised, so I go see ‘em live every chance I get. My girlfriend Kay-Kay and I cruise around southern Arizona following the tour and our favorite wrestlers.

Kay-Kay’s favorite is the Flyin’ Hawaiian, a very tall, very muscular Polynesian wrestler who moved to Arizona after a short stint in the army. I find him handsome and all, but my favorite is Wildcat Jackson. He’s a dreamy 6’ 7”, 325 lb mountain of masculinity that makes otherwise-normal women squeal on site.

After repeatedly trying to meet the Wildcat, I’d given up hope on ever getting to know him. His manager, wrestling bad guy Jumbo Jenkins, has a policy about letting fans backstage—unless they’re sporting 38 double-Ds anyway. Well, one night after the fights, Kay-Kay and I stopped at the 7-11 for some road supplies. And, guess who was their picking up a 12-pack of post-bout pain reliever? That’s right; the Wildcat!

Paralyzed by fear, I still didn’t say anything to him. But, he was driving 2006 Chevy Silverado, just like me! I couldn’t believe that my idol and hopeful future husband drove the same rig as me. Of course, Wildcat’s was lifted to the sky and equipped with huge mud tires. But this gave me an idea.

According to the SABYWF schedule, the tour was coming to a backyard in my neighborhood. I decided to lift my truck just like Wildcat’s and facilitate another “chance meeting.” I figured he couldn’t resist me if he could see what a huge fan I am. So, Kay-Kay and I sold some clothes on E-bay and pooled our next few paychecks to buy the lift kit and tires for my Silverado.

I decided to buy the Rancho Complete Lift Kit. It provides 4-full inches of lift, comes with everything I need and it lets me slip a set of gnarly 35” tires underneath. Rancho is the number-one name in suspension, which really helped in my decision. We had a few bucks left over from the E-bay money, so I tossed in a set of Bushwacker Fender Flares to buff up my truck’s stance a bit. There was no way Wildcat could resist me now.

Fight night came and I was ready. Kay-Kay and I followed Wildcat after the fight, hoping he’d go to the 7-11 again. Unfortunately, he stopped at the TGIF to pick up his girlfriend. Girlfriend! How could he have a girlfriend?! Without thinking I jumped from my lifted Silverado and grabbed that girl by the hair. I don’t know what got into me, but I lifted her skinny **** over my head and body slammed her to the pavement. Then I slapped Kay-Kay’s hand, tag-team style, and watch her put that hussy into a sleeper hold.

Next thing I know, Kay-Kay and I are in the back of a police cruiser, arrested for assault and battery. Needless to say, Wildcat won’t have anything to do with me, at least not until I’m off probation. But, in the end, my truck’s got a killer-looking lift and I’m still attending SABYWF wrestling matches, where I cheer my fighting idols on to victory.

The Future of John Cena
Posted by Vernon
Massimo Martinini asked:

Again, I’m going to comment on a few things before I get started. First all, WWE is doing a great thing with tribute to the Troops. I think it cost them putting it on NBC on a Saturday Night instead of their normal slot, but that’s just me I guess.

I might have actually called the Batista thing right. Unfortionetly, he really is hurt and will be out why past Wrestlemania. However, this bit of news does help my story a bit in the long run. Keep reading to find out why.

Legacy may become one of the most dangerous Stables ever. I can’t wait to see how this develops! I know what should happen, and again, it helps my story out, so I’ll get to it soon!

This JBL/Shawn Micheals thing will really be interesting to watch leading to Wrestlemania. And we all know that is exactly where it’s leading. What the stipulation will be, I’m not sure, but I expect these two to be facing off at Reliant stadium.

It’s week 2 and Jeff is still champ. You think they might go through with the Hardy/Hardy title run. I love how they make it subconsciously pleasing to us seeing both Hardy’s with titles (how often do they have titles at the same time?).

Well that’s it for the random thoughts, so on to my topic. I’m going to switch things up a bit and put my mind to work on individual wrestlers. As usual, I’ll give a little background then discuss what the company they are a part of should do with them. Some of them may be suprising, and some of you will claim I’m just another sheep following the heard….

The first person I’m looking at, unfortunately will make me lose some fans. They will see the man’s name and leave me and my article forever. He is the most hated man in wrestling, while at the same time is one of the better faces around. Please join me as I discuss “The Champ” John Cena.

*hears the thousands of mice click his article out and sighs*

Well, I’m still going to discuss him. First, a bit of a background, like we need it since the WWE constantly remind us of Cena’s “humble beginnings”. He is a 3-time US Champ, 2-time World Tag-team Champion (though only to enhance feuds), 3-time WWE Champion, 1 time and current World Heavyweight Champion! What else can this man do?

Well, for starters, he could disappear for a while. That’s right I said it, make him go away! Even when he was injured for 6-months, we heard about him being injured… until a month before his return when we were given his life story three times a week! Folks, I love Cena. I think he’s one of the better champions of the last few years, but he’s has been champion CONSTANTLY during the last few years, and has been in our face constantly! What should have been done was he comes back at Survivor Series against Batista, the man who injured him. Cena then faces a couple of jobbers the next couple of weeks and goes for the Intercontinental Championship facing Santino and a couple of others before getting to Regal. But no, he come back after a busted disc… after having freakin’ neck surgery … he comes back and faces Jericho for the title.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!?

Ok…so we have two options right now with Cena and his title; get rid of it quick or have him hold it for the next few months. Which one? Well, that’s what you’re going to keep reading for >:)

Option 1) The Quick release. Have Randy Orton win the fatal four-way match and take the title from Cena at the Royal Rumble , which will help the whole Legacy thing! Cena can’t challenge for the title because the winner of the Rumble challenges (though I think Smackdown or ECW should win). Cena gets placed in a #1 Contender’s match at Wrestlemania against either Mysterio or Kane (Kane being the more likely option). Kane wins, and Cena is again without a title. He finally “decides” to go for the IC title. Regal gives him a good fight, but Cena finally gets it from him. (This gives Regal the chance to go after the world title). Cena holds the IC for a while… beating CM Punk, Santino, and even has, but making them look real good in the process! Cean finally drops the title to the Legacy member not holding the World or Tag team Titles giving Legacy all the important titles. Cena has a small feud with legacy, but they are too strong for him. Cena then makes a claim for orton’s title. Batista returns and makes the claim that he want’s his title back, since that seems to be WWE’s favorite thing for him to say. It’s Cena/Batista II… at Summerslam! Winner is #1 Contender. Cena is better by three seconds this time. He goes on and wins the world title, even after beat downs and interference from Legacy! This begins legacy’s downfall, but that’s a different article ;-). Cena holds it a while… and he get an epic match at WM 26, maybe even an Elimination Chamber!

Option 2) The long reign. Make Cena unstoppable. I mean completely. No losses between now and… well you’ll see. Cena beats Orton at Royal Rumble, Jericho at NWO, the Rumble winner or #1 contender at WM 25, the winner of JBL/Michales at Backlash, and again at Night of Champions, Kozlov at ECW X-treme Rules PPV. (he demanded challenge and was moved to RAW) and Rey Mysterio at GAB! Cena is on fire, not losing any match in between those mentioned until….

I WALK ALLOOOOOOOOOOOONE!!

Batista comes back for his title. Between GAB and Summerslam, we see Batista constantly cost Cena matches. Cena turns around and costs Batista a few. They get so wond up that they actually **** each other! Summerslam sees Batista/Cena II in an ironman match for the title. The match is an hour long, with near falls but neither score a point. Finally, with 12 seconds left, Cena hits the FU and gets the pin! I want this match to be the Match of the Decade contender, which is funny because most people would say I picked the two most boring wrestlers in the world right now to do it.

Yes, both options see Batista and Cena around Summerslam. WWE wants it so bad they can taste it (it tastes like money, apparently). I wouldn’t mind seeing it either to be honest!. We see the two most popular (or better pushed, depending on how you look at things) wrestlers in the world going at it, and in either scenario the stakes are high! I think either of these scenarios would work.

However, I’m making one of the rivalries I mentioned sound ho-hum. I think Cena vs Legacy would be great all around. It gives Randy the title or at least puts him in the title picture, and gives the new guys a chance to beat a multiple time World Champion, and if nothing else they can make a good show against him.

Well… I guess that’s all for this week. Hey, I actually made it through an article without going crazy! Maybe it’s because this article is a bit shorter than usual? Either way, it’s a good day :-)

The Far Reaching Realm Of Amateur Wrestling
Posted by Vernon
Jim Brown asked:

The realm of amateur wrestling stretches farther than many people would ever consider possible. The field of amateur wrestling might begin in high school and expand to include the college years of a young wrestler’s life. There are many years that will pass before the amateur wrestler would ever consider turning professional. Those early years will be very busy ones for those amateur wrestlers that are hoping for a career as a professional wrestler one day.

Some amateur wrestlers are inspired to become involved in wrestling by a coach that worked at the high school they go to. The coach used the realm of education to single out one particular person who was quick minded and fast on their feet. That person could have become a track star if the coach had not used the realm of education to give the youngster an opportunity to succeed that was totally different than that of his friendship circle at school.

A college newspaper might have inspired a college student to get involved in the college sports program. The college athletics programs might seem to be a world away from a small town boy who had never been away from home before. Instead of facing a bleak first year at college, the youngster might have chosen to get involved in a sports activity that was listed in the college newspaper.

Most amateur wrestlers that participate in college sports programs that include wrestling as an elective, found out by accident that they were good at wrestling when they visit the college gymnasium on a rainy afternoon. They became totally committed to the program after reading the college wrestling news and realized that there were many colleges that would be visited during a season. The realm of amateur wrestling might put an amateur wrestler in touch with many people.

With enough practice, determination and dedication, an amateur wrestler might find that the realm of wrestling will eventually give them the opportunity to try out for the Olympic Wresting team. Some hard training wrestlers might even consider a career after college as a professional wrestler and not a corporate executive that punches a time clock each day. Some amateur wrestlers find that the realm of professional wrestling will allow them to earn higher salaries than they had ever hoped of achieving in the world of business or finance.

The realm of amateur wrestling provides many travel opportunities for students and with enough grit and daring, the travels could take the amateur wrestlers on trips that circumvent the globe. Each state championship that is won will serve to open up a world of unlimited possibilities. Some amateur wrestlers perfect their techniques and go on to become wrestling instructors for a new generation of wrestlers who are currently in junior high school.

Some amateur wrestlers use the realm of wrestling to meet members of the opposite ***. Some wrestlers gain a lot of satisfaction from being honored at award ceremonies for their hard work and these wrestlers will later become hero’s in the eye of many women who know a winner when they see one. The realm of amateur wrestling could be expanded to include offspring one day, and dreams of greatness can be passed down from one generation to another if the dedication and the love of the sport of wrestling is readily apparent.

The Benefits of Training in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)
Posted by Vernon
Jason Oconnor asked:

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a combination of karate, grappling, wrestling, Tang Soo Do, boxing, jujitsu, Tae Kwon Do and more all combined in one. Mixed martial arts, in its modern form, emerged in 1993 through the Ultimate Fighting Championships and was based on pitting different fighting styles against each other with minimal rules to determine which system would be better in a real, unregulated combat situation.

During the late 1990s, the governing bodies imposed extra rules for the safety of the athletes and to try to promote the sport and gain wider acceptance, but still maintaining the no holds barred idea. MMA has grown rapidly in the last few years with many people both young and old realizing the many benefits of mixed martial arts both physical and mental and this has seen enrollments in classes increasing worldwide.

MMA is classed as a combat sport, but it’s a sport that stresses the ideals of fair play and respect for your opponent still. However, MMA are still quite often wrongly known as vicious and brutal.

Regardless of MMA’s reputation, the competition is relatively safe. Due to the rules and regulations imposed and strictly enforced and the tough mental and physical conditioning of the opponents there has never been a death or indeed a critical injury report by the MMA as directly linked to any tournament.

Martial arts are great for the body. Regular training strengthens and tones the muscles and adds flexibility. Training in martial arts gives you a full cardio work out. You can expect to greatly increase your strength and stamina and improve your hand eye coordination. Martial arts is a good weight loss program as well because it becomes a complete system in which a healthy diet is part and when combined with the extreme physical activity proper weight loss is assured.

Classes are run at schools, dojos, youth groups organizations, church groups, and other, less formal settings. MMA is also being incorporated into many gyms as mixed martial arts become more popular.

A typical class will have you start with a warm up consisting of various stretching exercises, trunk rotations, jumps, squats and abs tightening exercises. Then there will be a series of movements taught and explained in full. Sparring is controlled and protective gear is worn, such as helmets, gloves and guards.

At other times a bag will be used for practicing kicks, jabs and punches. Although you may feel awkward and unfit at first, it will not take long before your fitness and skill level improves, along with your frame of mind.

People who practice MMA feel and look healthier, but there are far more benefits than the physical side. While many think of martial arts as violent, in the mainstream it is used as self defense. It does not encourage violence but teaches the student how to control anger and how to use self control and restraint.

Students are taught self discipline and the rigors of training builds character and self-confidence, which ultimately reduces temper induced rages that can often be the cause of many street fights. This confidence carries over into everyday life and as a result mixed martial arts students tend to be become better people than they were.

Mixed martial arts training teaches you that you must control the powers that you have had the privilege of learning and never use it recklessly or without thought. Students are also taught that before any success is achieved they will fail many times and that practiced and perseverance is the key. This is a valuable lesson to learn and will often carry over into other endeavors the student undertakes.

Furthermore, the training teaches you that every person is responsible for his own actions and must understand and abide by the given rules. This kind of training improves one’s actions in life as well as in martial arts training and tournaments. Many of these arts build a spiritual life into the training, with courtesy, self-control, perseverance and integrity emphasized in the classes. So much so that many Christian Church groups are running mixed martial arts classes for their youth organizations due to the character building characteristics in martial arts training that are also much a part of Christian beliefs.

Given all this, it is no wonder that so many parents are enrolling their children in mixed martial arts classes today. They see their children’s health and fitness improve, something their child’s peers often lack. And they also witness their children’s mindset, attitudes to life and self-improvement, respect and courage all improve as well.

Anyone who trains in karate, jujitsu, Tae Kwon Do or any of the arts will gain these benefits. If you have any desire to improve your body and mind at the same time with only one activity, then martial arts is something you ought to seriously consider. You don’t just get in shape physically, but also mentally and spiritually. No gym workout can compare. All across the world, adults are joining dojos and thoroughly enjoying the many benefits of mixed martial arts.
